The final event of the four fixture North Midlands Cross Country league took place over the weekend at Wollaton Park Nottingham. Once again Mansfield Harriers had good senior representation but after the County Championships the weekend before and the Midland Championship race in a fortnight most of the juniors took a well deserved break. Mansfield’s recent success continued as the club had seven podium places.
Leading the way for the club was local legend Andy Wetherill who took first place in the over 55 age group. A superb series of races saw Wetherill place 65th and first back for Mansfield to win the category by over 100 points from his nearest rival. Nigel Watkin finished 3rd overall in the same age group placing 123rd and Steve Davies 4th overall and 171st at Nottingham. The veteran men’s team showed great consistency throughout the series to take a third place final spot.
Also competing for the club in the senior men’s event was Phil Shaw placing 98th followed by Gary Morley 104th and 7th in the Over 40 series, Craig Linacre 150th, Jack Cooke 151st, Garry Hodgkins 169th, Dave Robertson 238th, Julian Wood 251st and Trevor Hiscox 260th. Competing in his first race for the club was Graeme Baguley who crossed the line in 255th, a graduate from the Run Together groups that have links with the club.
First home for the ladies was Kahli Johnson who crossed the line in 35th spot and after a fantastic series placed second overall in the Over 40 category. Amanda Hardy finished the series with a podium place with second in the over 50 age group and 85th at Nottingham. The veteran women also raced superbly over the season to place second team overall.
Bev Armstrong was second home on the day for Mansfield in 49th position and 6th overall in the over 40 category, Helen Pritchett placed 81st, Jackie Duers 99th, Karen Kowalski 118th, Diane Stewart 119th, Jemma Arbon 128th also 6th overall in the over 35 age group and the team was completed by Sarah Sinclair in 131st.
Two of Mansfield’s highly talented Under11 girls also competed as they are not racing again this month. County cross country champion Beth Hamilton continued her excellent winter by finishing 4th on the day and taking third spot overall. County bronze medallist Alex Foster in only her second race in this league continues to go from strength to strength placing 5th out of the 36 finishers.
Racing at the Resolution Run 12k on Sunday at Rother Valley Park Mansfield had six athletes complete the course. Run over trails in very wet and muddy conditions Maddy Collinge was first back in 1 hour 7.10 for third place in the over 50 age group. Trevor Hiscox recorded 1.08.52, Esther Sinclair 1.09.17, Tina Copcutt 1.16.40, Angela Purdue 1.16.44, Michelle Baxter 1.16.44 and Theresa Copcutt in 1.30.00.
